"drop-in and i will pay you $15/hour..."
started when the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) was set to narrow its definition of disability as an austerity measure
to exclude recipients able to work part-time or episodically and future such applicants. this would have been fine if our
other social assistance program, Ontario Works (OW), was providing the same level of support, but it is largely not the case.
the ODSP maximum allowance is $1,169/month, that on OW is $733/month. both inhumanely low, but big difference. in that context, "drop-in.." was set to
fundraise for money to pay for a lawyer to research legal avenues to help those on social assistance. for example,
do we have the ground for a class action lawsuit?
research reveals that legal clinics can't accept donations and advise we keep the money for community-building. ARCH Disability Law Centre can't
address any case related to ODSP (per Legal Aid mandate). private lawyers ask about $300/hour.
then, the pandemic changes the context and the change of definition of disability is put on hold.
the participants and organizers of "drop-in" democratically decide to give the $400 made with the wheels to the
Encampment Support Network (ESN). ESN asks we send a letter to Councillors.
